Kenyatta National Hospital To Dispose Of Unclaimed Bodies
A national hospital in Kenya has notified
citizens that it will get rid of more than 200 dead bodies that haven’t been
claimed in a long period of time. The unclaimed bodies will be disposed of
within a period of seven days.
In a national newspaper on Tuesday, Kenyatta
National Hospital (KNH) claimed that they will dispose of 203 bodies that have
been in the farewell home for a longer period if the families don’t claim the
bodies of their loved ones.
KNH, through the gazette, went ahead to note
that they will seek permission from the court in order to proceed with the act,
thus giving Kenyans only seven days to get to the mortuary to claim the bodies
of their departed.
The source claims that most of the abandonment
of young innocent souls by their parents in the facility is usually caused by
financial shortages, stress, and depression. In 2022, KNH had to dispose of 233
unclaimed bodies through the legal process in order to create more space in the
morgue for smooth services.
According to the Kenyan constitution’s Public
Health Act, bodies of the deceased should only last for two weeks in the
morgue, and if unclaimed, they should be disposed of from the farewell home.
Langata Cemetery has always been a home for so
many homeless individuals who pass away and whose backgrounds are unknown. It
has not only served the homeless but also foreigners and local citizens who do
not have the facilities to fly or transport their loved ones to their various
villages.
